Stauffer Guitar Duo

DSC_9461_3818The idea of playing together occurred several years ago at a Christmas party in the Tórshavn Music School and for a long time, we performed together ‘on and off’ when the opportunity presented itself as in October 2012, when we went on tour performing Fernando Carullis Gran Duetto and Filippo Gragnanis Sestetto Op.9, which includes two guitars.
A more committed co-operation began in the summer of 2014, when we travelled to Prague to collect our 18th century style guitars from the outstanding Czech luthier, Jan Tulacek. The design and functional details of the instruments are typical of the guitars that made Johann Georg Stauffer (1778-1853) well known as one of the leading guitar makers in Europe at that time. It is thanks to these instruments, that we have managed to come closer to the music’s sonorous ideals and at the same time, gain a new and deeper understanding of the composer’s intentions. We have since concentrated on the rich repertoire for two guitars of the 18th century. In the summer of 2015, we made a concert tour arranged by the Summartónar Festival with a programme of duets by Filippo Gragnani and Mauro Giuliani in addition to solo works by Fernando Sor.
